Background Information: For better or worse, the interpretation by Andrew Lloyd Webber of the gothic horror / romance novel by Gaston Leroux has done what Spielberg’s Jaws did for fish stories for stage musicals, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While the film of director Joel Schumacher turns on his usually optimistic visual verve, the scale of his latest film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically concentrated, but dynamically enhanced through the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and the London Boys Choir. This single cd version shows all of the main Phantom songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting his Phantom with a welcome, youthful sensuality, making a fine foil for the ever-conflicted Christine of Emmy Rossum. David Cullen, the original show orchestrator, has produced convincing new contemporary arrangements to frame the songs of Webber — which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film “Learn to Be Lonely,” sung by Minnie Driver.
